PRP Injections Q & A

Active Future Solutions

What is a PRP injection?

A platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection is a quick and virtually painless shot which increases joint mobility and function while decreasing pain. PRP shots do not work by masking your pain, but by helping heal the desired area so symptoms do not come back.

What are some diagnoses that can benefit from a PRP injection?

Dr. Nabity and Tina Pawlich, RN offer this revolutionary treatment to help your body heal itself and decrease your pain related to:

  • Tendonosis
  • Tendonitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Ligament problems in your joints

By treating the root of the problem, your quality of life improves and you experience less pain.

How does the PRP injection work?

Dr. Nabity draws a sample of your blood and places it in a centrifuge, which spins your blood at a high velocity, separating out the platelets. Platelets contain growth factor proteins that promote healing and tissue regeneration in your body. Dr. Nabity takes the concentrated platelets from the centrifuge and recombines them with your blood plasma to create PRP.

Dr. Nabity then applies a numbing cream around the desired area to ensure your comfort during the treatment. The injection rejuvenates the injured tissue, attracting stem cells to regenerate and strengthen the tissue by forming new healthy blood vessels and repairing any functional damage.

What can I expect after a PRP injection?

The procedure is relatively fast, lasting between 30-45 minutes. While results from the PRP injection vary from person to person, most people notice an overall improvement in their joint stiffness and pain in as little as two to six weeks after treatment. However, maximum effects are seen at six to nine months.

Because the PRP shot is a nonsurgical treatment and requires no downtime, you can resume your daily activities following the injection. While side effects are uncommon, they may include numbness, redness, or mild swelling for a few days at the injection site. These symptoms should subside on their own.

To maintain optimal results, Dr. Nabity recommends follow up treatments every four to six weeks.
